Banking Web sites worldwide surpassed the 2,000 mark at year-end growing nearly five-fold from the 425 Web sites online a year ago. Quarterly growth picked up as 511 new Webs appeared compared to 312 in third quarter, 355 in second quarter, and 396 in first quarter. The percentage gain for the quarter was 34%. In the United States, home to 1,343 or 67% of the worldwide total, 257 Webs debuted, a 24% increase. Credit unions accounted for 45% of the U.S. total.
Web Account Access
Most Web sites are information-only. But a growing number offer interactive features such as calculators, loan applications, and stock quotes. Still only 55 Webs out of 2,001 (2.8%) offer account access. This percentage will increase rapidly as more data processing vendors offer Web connectivity, and as banks around the world roll out their 1997 Web upgrades. By year-end we predict that 10% of all banking Webs will offer account access.
