Star Bank (Cincinnati, OH; $10.8 billion; 425,000 ATM cards) launched free banking on the Web featuring the usual account access functions but no bill payment. The bank makes it easy for users to log in using either their ATM card number and PIN, or social security number and PIN. What makes the Star announcement noteworthy is that it included the best “online banking launch” press release we’ve seen. The emphasis was on ease-of-use and universal access, something reporters might not have picked up on otherwise. An excerpt:

… there is no paper work or forms to fill out… you automatically have access to your accounts, 24-hours a day from any personal computer… (you) will not have to load additional software… This is not a test or a limited promotion, Star Bank Internet Banking is available in all Star Bank markets, to all customers …(it) is both Macintosh and IBM compatible.

Contact: Richard K. Davis is EVP Consumer Banking, (513) 632-4000.
