On the Web, you can make a name for yourself without spending a dime on advertising or sharing revenue with co-branding partners. Just create a catchy name, secure the rights to the domain name for $100, imbed the appropriate keywords on your Web, and let the search engines find you.

Case in point: The State Savings Bank (Columbus, OH; $2.0 billion) www.state-savings.com runs Car-Loan.com www.car-loan.com. The site is run by the bank’s indirect loan division and contains an online application for residents of Ohio only, plus information for dealers about its capabilities as an indirect lender. One can only speculate what they plan on doing with their other 25 registered domain names (see table below).
