Comerica Bank (Detroit, MI; $34 billion; 650,000 ATM cards) rolled out its PC banking via Quicken and QuickBooks in Michigan. Pricing is on the high-side and limits the number of dial-ins that can be made without incurring penalty fees. In a world of flat-rate Net access and free online bank account access, session limits/fees are just one complication too many for both employees and users to comprehend. Although there is a real cost to these sessions in the Intuit/Checkfree dial-up model, progressive banks need to price their online services in a way that does not penalize the use of basic online account look-up. If/when Comerica offers an alternative free account access program on the Net*, the dial-up fees could be justified.
