Great point in your post today - if a large portion of our traffic is related to the post authenticated channel - then let's make it easier for customers and prospects to find information related to these services. At Mechanics Bank, we've had the first primary navigation spot saved for online banking services for nearly four years. It's amazing how many sites aren't making these services more prominent. Thanks for bringing up the issue today. Look forward to seeing you and Eric and Finovate in a few weeks.

Author: Brett King
Date: Apr 22, 2013 8:11 PM
URL: http://www.about.me/brettking

Jim,

A nice balanced view. I too believe that we'll still see branches long into our future, but the economics of the business will be such that we'll see a dramatic reduction in numbers and square footage as you've pointed out. To measure the rate of reduction or change I think there are some very simple metrics:

1. Total number of branches
2. Average Square Footage per branch
3. Total revenue per customer per branch (as compared honestly with other channels)
4. Revenue mix per channel and per journey

I spoke with Ron Shevlin last week and he says he's tired of this debate and wants to move on. I think I'm feeling the same. The whole reason I started the conversation on this was really that the data is glaringly obvious that the business is changing, but most retail bankers are still too branch-centric. The only way I felt I could shake these people out of their reverie was to attack this issue hard - to make them question their reference point. That way, I thought we'd get a swing of the pendulum somewhere closer to where it needs to be.

The reality is that those who believe in customer engagement are trying to provide a right-sized, channel agnostic approach, and as a result they're trying lots of new things and de-emphasizing the physical space as the core of the business. However, there are even more than desperately want to believe that things aren't going to change and they'll be able to retain the status quo. I think I've probably inspired those that can be to be more balanced on the revenue and engagement side, and have equally frustrated those who are hoping that I'm wrong.

In the end time, customer behavior and economics will sort this out. The organization that is adaptable and ready to experiment with new engagement models will survive, and those that don't wont.

I think it's time to start focusing on a more positive dialog again around what's exciting, interesting and revolutionary in the business. That's my plan for the rest of the year.

Oh, and ... on-boarding as many Moven customers as I can :)

BK

Thanks for the heads-up. The word "first" is dangerous. Sounds like GoBank beat them to it by a few weeks. Very innovative stuff out of Green Dot. I'll update the post.

Even though it makes it easier to log in, it also helped me identify services that they have always provided but that I have always scrolled past, trying to login.

Chase demonstrates that "less is more" and uses the good principle of offering the products that have the highest conversion rate.

The good ole' 80/20 rule at work!

I love crowdfunding too- will be interesting to see where it goes / how it grows. Two other examples I think are interesting: an education funding platform started by a classmate of mine theschoolfund.org, and a SaaS platform for large charities and big events (like the NYC Marathon) that my brother works for- www.crowdrise.com

I’ve discussed how the goal of customer loyalty programs should be reducing friction; in operational efficiency, authorization strategies, and keeping it simple. Square is doing well in operational efficiency and keeping it simple with this program. I’ve stopped taking punch cards from retailers, even though I love getting free stuff because I don’t like carrying them around and can never find my card when I need it. The system Square has established for both storage and reminders of reward card programs is set up to generate high customer loyalty among its users.

Author: Peter Renton
Date: Jan 11, 2013 11:02 AM
URL: http://www.lendacademy.com

Jim, I am also excited about the future of p2p lending and crowdfunding. Although I certainly wouldn't call them synonymous as you have done in the title of this post.

They have some things in common but crowdfunding is its own distinct industry. It will be interesting to see the equity crowdfunding space unfold in the coming years but I would argue that from an investor perspective it will be a lot more risky than a p2p lending investment.

Now, debt-based crowdfunding for businesses could be a different story. Investors who loan money to established companies with a proven track record of profits will likely do better than those who invest in the equity of startups. At least that is my prediction.

Imagine the profits they have compare to other business that hardly own an advertising slot on web marketing due to competition. The best thing that small businesses can do is to engage in any pay per click marketing. Anyway, can you share the current updates of these financial services from 2011 to present?

Author: mikepol
Date: Sep 22, 2012 5:39 AM
URL: http://www.shelfgenie.com

I am a customer (for the moment) of BBVA Compass and have a terrible opinion of this new real-time banking. It seems that it has been in operation for a few weeks at the time I am writing this. I have several businesses that I own and run each through various BBVA Compass accounts. Two of the businesses are franchise businesses, and those that are franchisees, franchise companies typically pull royalties via ACH each week. For me, one pulls on Wednesday, and the other pulls on Thursday. The issue I have, I often don't know what the total ACH amount is going to be until the day before. When I know how much it is, I will move money over the following day to cover the ACH amount. Well, because of this new real time banking system, I have had over $150 already of NSF charges over the past 2 weeks. Plenty of money was in my account at the end of the day to cover all liabilities, but the ACH amounts happened to come through in the morning, and I didn't make my deposits until the afternoon, and I was hit with a $38 NSF charge.I talked with the branch manager at the McKinney TX branch, and his suggestion was that I get overdraft protection, such that it drops all of the NSF charges to $12. A little shocked that was his advice, instead of helping me find a solution, he suggested a loan product that costs less in fees than NSF charges. Because of the nature of my franchise businesses and having a separate account for ACH amounts, BBVA Compass Bank will end up loosing all of my business. I hope the Real-Time banking brings enough NSF charges into their bank to cover the number of dis-satisfied customers that decided to leave as a result.

What I found most humorous, the way the manager tried to spin Real-Time banking as a positive for the customer. He said my deposits are now immediate. Well, that is simply a lie, as I recently deposited a 20k check, and still had to wait for 10 days to have it clear. How does Real-Time banking help a customer again?

The same holds true about the message of the Security Checkpoint. It makes a phishing scammer's life much easier.

Do they still use this template?
